Ryan Hoskins Metalsmithing

Ryan Hoskins started his venture into metalsmithing at age 13 after his father taught him to weld.   At age 19, he took several workshops at The Appalachian Center for Craft in Tennessee.  Then at 20 years old he participated in the Work Study program at the John C. Campbell Folk School for 3 months.  He later went back to The Appalachian Center for Craft and graduated in 2009 with a BFA in Metalsmithing.

Since then he has opened up his own metalsmithing studio and primarily works on a custom commission basis.  Currently his main focus is in hand made knives, preferring to work with pattern welded steel.  He takes a lot of pride in his work, knowing that he has sole authorship in every aspect of the piece created; starting with the forge welding on a billet of damascus, to hand stitching the leather sheath for a knife.  The most pride comes from creating an heirloom quality object that will be used and enjoyed for years to come.
